Like all open mic faithful should, I follow my current favorite venue (Deep South the Bar) on Facebook. And just recently, it totally paid off in the form of Something I Didn’t Know But Would’ve Been Sorry To Miss.
Turns out, a microphone/audio electronics company called Shure has declared a National Open Mic Night. Participating venues are holding sanctioned events across the third week of April. (I have no idea what it takes to become an official participant, whether they get free equipment to plug, or what.)
Of course, it’s more about musicians. But who cares.
Deep South accepts poets on their Tuesday stage (and openly welcomes us on Wednesdays for their regular acoustic open mic). And as a self-proclaimed open mic tourist, I will absolutely be there, along with one of my favorite local poets.
There’s still time to check the official roster of participating open mics, find one close to home, and work up a strong piece or two.
Make it a thing, poets.
